about

Baby Zionov is the musical project of Aaliyah Zionov (she/her), a musician and songwriter currently based in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Baby Zionov's music takes influence from 90s happy hardcore, 70s space disco, and vintage 16-bit video game soundtracks. She lays her playfully sensual vocals delicately throughout the mix.

PJ Princess is a sonic smorgasbord served up at 135bpm with disparate sounds tied together by the vocal accompaniment of Moody V., the moniker of Madison Van Staden (Babyteeth, Van Staden & Böhm, Moody V & The Mentral Cycle).

"PJ Princess was put together in a haze at some point deep into Auckland’s second lockdown last year" says Zionov. "I think I was trying to make a grime tune, but at some point my conscious mind basically checked out and some kind of dream logic took over."

"The track is a stream of consciousness you can dance to, the beat is put together with all sorts of weird sounds and ephemera that were occupying my mind’s ear at the time. It probably shouldn’t work on paper, but Maddy’s gorgeous, wistful voice, and her lyrics about the bittersweet comfort of being alone, tie it all together so perfectly. I think the end result is really lively!"

PJ Princess is accompanied by a digital b-side, a 12" Club Mix that Zionov completed herself. She reflects "It's a song about giving yourself space to breathe, so I think it’s only fair to give the song itself some space to breathe with this extended version. Extended mixes are a bit of a dying art nowadays but I love them because they let you fully immerse yourself in a song and appreciate it from different angles. Each of the different elements of the sound-world get a little more time to themselves here — the groovy bits get to groove out more, the vibey bits get to vibe out more, and the sad bits get to sad out more."
